The email system update is underway. It is taking somewhat longer than expected and will probably be up by 1pm.
Email system update on Wednesday, July 13 at 11am
The departmental email server will be upgraded, starting at 11am on Wednesday July 13, 2016. We expect that the upgrade will take about one hour.
The new server will have stronger security and updated software. The web client, squirrelmail, will be slightly newer and there seem to be no significant changes in its behaviour. Access to our email system by the POP3 protocol will no longer be supported (an email about this was sent more than 3 weeks ago to affected users).
After the update please let requests@math.toronto.edu know if you discover any problems.
Email system updates
We are planning to update our underlying email system later this month. This will result in a more up-to-date and secure environment for our users.
We will be updating how people can connect to our email system:
1) POP access will no longer be available since it is very inefficient (it requires redownloading all files when getting new messages). If you use POP please change to IMAP; most modern email clients can automatically detect the appropriate settings. If you need more details, below is an example of the settings (click on the image to see a larger version):
2) Our system supports encrypted IMAP access to mail.math.toronto.edu (on port 143) with STARTTLS. Modern email clients support this type of access.
3) Our system supports encrypted message submission to smtp.math.toronto.edu (on port 587) with STARTTLS. Modern email clients support this type of access.
4) We will continue to have webmail access using a slightly updated version of our current Squirrelmail server.
After the update please let requests@math.toronto.edu know if you discover any problems.
Normal operations resumed after power outage
All our systems appear to be functioning normally after the power to Bahen and 215 Huron was restored this morning.
Bahen and 215 Huron Power Shutdowns starting May 26, 2016
Major electrical shutdowns have been scheduled by the University. Except for emergency power Bahen and 215 Huron will have complete power shutdowns on:
Thursday May 26, 2016 starting at 9:30pm and ending at 7:30am
All the departmental systems (coxeter, sphere, mail, web, etc.) will be brought down starting at 8:30pm before the outages and brought back up the following morning. We estimate that things should be back to normal by about 8:30am.
In the event that special circumstances arise then, if time permits, a notice will be posted here.
Updates at 4:15pm on Wednesday May 18, 2016
The departmental servers coxeter and the mail, web, share, ptr, and blog/wiki servers will have software updates applied on Wednesday afternoon, May 18, 2016 which will require rebooting (most servers will be unavailable starting at 4:15pm). Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect the systems to be back up by 5:00pm.
coxeter update on 2016mar30 was successful
coxeter appears to be working fine after the update.
coxeter update at 4:15pm on Wednesday March 30, 2016
coxeter will have software updates applied on Wednesday afternoon, March 30, 2016 which will require rebooting starting at 4:15pm. At present coxeter is the only machine requiring an update, although the mail and web servers may also need to be updated on Wednesday. Since some updates will be applied while coxeter is still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing coxeter down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect all systems to be back up by 5:00pm.
