The departmental mail, web, and blog/wiki servers will have software updates applied on Wednesday afternoon, March 16, 2016 which will require rebooting (this will be done during the 3pm-5pm time for the network upgrades). Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect the systems to be back up by 5:00pm.
Networking updates on 2016mar16 from 3pm-5pm
The main departmental networking infrastructure will be upgraded in the afternoon of Wednesday March 16 from 3pm until 5pm. During this time there will be a few network outages (which should be less than about 5 minutes in total for a particular machine) as the switches connecting desktop computers are moved and as the main departmental servers are moved to new connections to the University backbone. The new connection will provide redundancy for desktop computers and (in the future) for some of the main servers. The new connection to the University backbone will run at 10Gbps so that transferring large files will be faster.
Server updates on 2016feb10 were successful
The departmental servers appear to be working fine after the updates.

University Employee/Student Payroll and Work-From-Home Phishing Scam
Faculty, staff, and students at Canadian Universities are being targeted by phishing scammers. Either payroll information is requested so that the scammers can divert funds or people (usually students) are recruited to accept money into their bank accounts which then then forward to others. This appears to be a money laundering scheme.
