Bahen and 215 Huron Power Outages

Major electrical shutdowns have been scheduled by the University.  Except for emergency power Bahen will have a complete power shutdown on:

Thursday December 10, 2015 starting at 11pm and ending at 7am

Power to both Bahen and 215 Huron will be unavailable on:

Tuesday December 15, 2015 starting at 11pm and ending at 7am

All the departmental systems (coxeter, mail, web, etc.) will be brought down between 10pm and 11pm before the outages and brought back up the following morning between 7am and 8am.

In the event that special circumstances arise and either of these shutdowns is rescheduled then, if time permits, a notice will be posted here

Updates at 4:15pm on Wednesday November 25, 2015

The departmental servers coxeter, sphere, and the mail, web, share, ptr, and blog/wiki servers will have software updates applied tomorrow on Wednesday afternoon, November 25, 2015 which will require rebooting (most servers will be unavailable starting at 4:15pm). Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect the systems to be back up by 5:00pm.

Fake Blackboard login page

The Academic Technologies Director at UofT has asked that the following information be disseminated.

We have been alerted to attempts by hackers to target UofT students with fake “Blackboard” prompts, which redirect to a fake Blackboard login page. This could include receiving an email that says you have an important course announcement or assignment due.
The real UofT Blackboard can only be accessed via the UTWeblogin page. Also, always make sure that the URL says portal.utoronto.ca, and NOT blackboard.edu, or any other URL.
If you think you may have inadvertently typed your UtorID credentials into a fake version of Blackboard, please contact the Information Commons asap for assistance in resetting your credentials: help.desk@utoronto.ca

“kile” and “kate” should run more quickly on coxeter

kile (an integrated LaTeX environment) and kate (an advanced text editor for KDE) on coxeter now automatically run with the “–graphicssystem native” option, which should result in better response times when using those programs.
