Windows XP will reach its "End of Support" on April 8, 2014

Microsoft says that they will no longer support Windows XP starting on April 8, 2014.  See:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/endofsupport.aspx

for more information.  Some IT Security people expect that there are malicious people waiting for that date to take advantage of Windows XP computers.  Windows XP should not be used on networks after the support ends.

University owned computers can be upgraded with software available at:

More Information about new Certificate for UofT Wireless

For additional information about the new certificate for the UofT wireless system please see:

http://help.ic.utoronto.ca/solution_id_1942.html

Security Certificate for UofT (and eduroam) wireless networks will be renewed on March 10

Because the server certificate for the UofT and eduroam wireless networks here at the University are being renewed you will be asked to accept/verify this new certificate the first time you connect after it is installed (on March 10, 2014).  This should only happen once per wireless device.

Here is the message about this that was posted by the  Academic and Collaborative Technologies Support Manager on Blackboard:

On Monday, March 10th, the security certificate for the University’s wireless authentication server will be renewed.

When attempting to connect to the UofT or eduroam networks after this update, you will be prompted to accept or verify the new certificate. Once you accept the new certificate, your wireless device will save the setting and connect automatically thereafter.

For campus wireless access information, please visit the Information Common website at http://help.ic.utoronto.ca/content/20/704/en/wireless-access.html

University Policy on Encrypting Personal and Confidential Information

It is University policy that any personal and other confidential information that is outside our secure server environment with restricted user rights must be protected with properly implemented encryption.  This means that any personal desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, USB keys, etc. must not have personal or other confidential information unless they are securely encrypted.  This can help prevent any data breaches caused by lost/stolen hardware, although any system with personal and other confidential information must also be kept secure with restricted access, up-to-date software (including the OS), etc.

There are resources describing encryption and what types of information must be protected at: http://encrypt.utoronto.ca

If you have any questions please send email to requests@math.toronto.edu

Serious security flaws in Apple iOS and Mac OSX operating systems

The following is from UofT’s IT Security people (Quick Summary: upgrading to the latest versions of iOS and MAC OSX will fix this serious security problem, but that does mean going to iOS7.0.6 for iPad and iPhone users, which many people have avoided):

There has been a recently discovered flaw in Apple products
which affects how SSL certificates are validated.

Apple has just released a patch for OSX (10.9.2), please
update all OSX devices ASAP.

More details about OSX 10.9.2 are available here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6150

If you haven't already patched iOS devices (iPhone, iPad,
etc), please update to 7.0.6 ASAP.

More details about iOS 7.0.6 are available here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6147

You can test if your device is vulnerable by visiting this site:
https://gotofail.com/

For those interested in the details of the vulnerability itself,
there's a good writeup here:

Server updates on 2014feb19 were successful

The departmental servers are working fine after the updates, which finished just before 5pm.

Mail server going down at 3:15pm on Wednesday February 19, 2014

After testing we have determined that the update of the mail server will likely take an extra hour due to filesystem maintenance.  Because of this the mail server will be going down at approximately 3:15pm tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb 19).  The other servers will be going down at the usual time (4:15pm) and we expect all servers to be available by 5:00pm if there are no unforeseen problems.

Updates at 4:15pm on Wednesday February 19, 2014

The departmental servers coxeter, sphere, and the mail, web, share, ptr, and blog/wiki servers will have software updates applied on Wednesday afternoon, February 19, 2014 which will require rebooting (most servers will be unavailable starting at 4:15pm).  Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect the systems to be back up by 5:00pm.
