The departmental servers are working fine after the updates.
For increased reliability redundant power supplies were added to coxeter and sphere and they were attached to redundant UPSes.
The departmental servers coxeter and sphere will have redundant power supplies installed and have their software updated, and the mail, web, share, ptr, and blog/wiki servers will have software updates applied tomorrow, Wednesday afternoon, January 22, 2014 which will require rebooting (most servers will be unavailable starting at 4:15pm). Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect the systems to be back up by 5:00pm.

The updated firefox that is now on coxeter is able to view PDF files within a tab. If you prefer you can still use a different viewer (for example, okular) for PDF files by choosing this at:
Edit -> Preferences -> Applications -> Portable Document Format (PDF)
The department has purchased a Xerox Phaser 7500DT colour laserprinter for faculty use. This printer can print up to 11″x17″ (tabloid) pages. Due to the high cost of the printer and toner, the printer is only accessible by the faculty.
The printer is called lwcol (for colour). So, from coxeter the following would work:
Print -Plwcol filename
Remote printing (from laptops, for example) to lwcol is currently not supported. Please copy files to coxeter and print them from there.
Please note that the department will be monitoring the usage of the printer toner cartridges and if costs become high then charging for using this printer will be considered. It is hoped that usage will be reasonable and that this will not be necessary.
Major maintenance has been scheduled for the UofT Portal between 5:00 p.m. on Friday December 20th and the evening of Sunday, December 22nd 2013.
During this time The Learning Portal and Blackboard Collaborate will be unavailable. Services will be restored once work is completed and may be available sooner.

The departmental servers are working fine after the updates. coxeter and sphere took somewhat longer to update due to the large number of updates (this was a minor version update to our RHEL distribution).
