Software updates at 4:15pm on Wednesday February 6, 2013

The departmental servers coxeter, sphere, and the mail, web, and blog/wiki servers will have software updates applied this Wednesday afternoon, February 6, 2013 which will require rebooting (most servers will be unavailable starting at 4:15pm).  Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect the systems to be back up by 5:00pm.

Server updates on 2013jan16 were successful

The departmental servers all appear to be working fine after the updates, which were completed shortly before 5:30pm.

Longer software updates at 3:45pm (until perhaps 5:30pm) on Wednesday January 16, 2013

The departmental servers coxeter, sphere, and the mail, web, and blog/wiki servers will have software updates applied on Wednesday afternoon, January 16, 2013 which will require rebooting (most servers will be unavailable starting at 3:45pm).  Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). Since this is a larger update than usual we expect the systems to be back up by 5:30pm.

Server updates on 2012dec19 were successful

The departmental servers all appear to be working fine after the updates.  The mailserver did not take as long as expected and was up before 5:15pm.

Mailserver restart delay

The mailserver is running a filesystem verification program and that will delay its coming back online.  It should be back before 6pm.

The departmental servers are working fine after the updates, and the kdm problem has not recurred.

We hope that the update described below will also fix the kdm display manager problem that is causing problems with the “red coxeter login window” not properly being restarted after people logout from some graphical terminals (in offices or BA6200, for example).

Problem with kdm (graphical login manager)

Currently there is a problem with kdm which means that graphical logins to coxeter from machines in offices and BA6200, for example, is not working.  We are investigating the problem and may have to reboot later today.

A phishing email with Subject:

Mail: Respond Immediately!!

and claiming to come From:

University of Toronto <ysun39@fordham.edu>

has been sent to the department.  Please delete it, it is spam.
