Software updates at 4:15pm on Wednesday January 18, 2012

The departmental servers coxeter, sphere, and the mail, web, and blog/wiki servers will have software updates applied on Wednesday afternoon, January 18, 2012 which will require rebooting (most servers will be unavailable starting at 4:15pm).  Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect the systems to be back up by 5:00pm.

Problems with MathSciNet

Due to a problem with someone here at the University (not in our department) downloading too much content from MathSciNet, direct access to http://www.ams.org/mathscinet was requesting a “username and password”
(which we don’t have) for MathSciNet Authentication, when searches were attempted from departmental machines.  If one tried to “Cancel” the connection then messages such as “MathSciNet Access Error” and “MathSciNet is available by subscription only” were displayed.

Work is underway to restore the direct access (in fact things appear to be working again at this moment) but in any case the access through the University’s Library URL:

http://simplelink.library.utoronto.ca/url.cfm/55083

still works as usual.  You may want to bookmark this URL in case the problem recurs over the break.

Server updates on 2011dec07 were successful

The departmental servers all appear to be working fine after the updates.

Software updates at 4:15pm on Wednesday December 7, 2011

The departmental servers coxeter, sphere, and the mail, web, and blog/wiki servers will have software updates applied on Wednesday afternoon, December 7, 2011 which will require rebooting (most servers will be unavailable starting at 4:15pm).  Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. "sage" now available on sphere for testing

“sage” is now available on sphere for testing.  Please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu if you have any difficulties with it.

From http://www.sagemath.org/: Sage is a free open-source mathematics software system licensed under the GPL. It combines the power of many existing open-source packages into a common Python-based interface.

Much larger email quotas

Now that our new backup servers are online there is more space and the email quotas have been increased for all users by one-half gigabyte.

Phishing email messages

Starting yesterday afternoon there were many phishing emails sent out to departmental members.  If you received an email from:

“Department of Mathematics, University of Toronto” helpdesk@math.toronto.edu

with Subject Line:

Your Mailbox Has Exceeded

and the message asks you to click on a link that is in Germany (the hostname part ends in “.de”) then that is a phishing message.

APSC Professors and Instructors Unable to Access Course Sites

The following is from:
http://www.systemstatus.utoronto.ca/systems/instructors-unable-to-access-course-sites

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011 at 11:18 am   »   Instructors Unable to Access Course Sites.

Due to a problem with the data feed between the HR system and the University’s authentication and authorization database (UTORauth) during the day Tuesday, many instructors have lost access to their course sites in the Portal today.

We are currently rolling back our access lists to Monday’s state and instructors should have their access reinstated in the next 1-2 hours. Normal updates will resume tonight.

Students are not affected, and there are no implications to data outside this one specific area of the system. Some slowdowns may be encountered in other areas of the Portal while the correction is made. Thank you for your patience.
