UofT Network Outages on October 24, 2010

Cogeco will be repairing damaged fibre cables that are the primary Internet connection for the UofT network during the early morning (from 00:01 to 06:00) on Sunday October 24, 2010.  There will be multiple network slowdowns, re-connects, and perhaps outages during that time.

Server updates were all successful

The departmental servers all appear to be working fine after the updates.

Software updates on Thursday October 21, 2010

The departmental servers coxeter, sphere, and the mail, web, and blog/wiki servers will have a few software updates applied during Thursday afternoon (October 21, 2010) which will require rebooting.  Some important updates arrived today (Wednesday) but there wasn’t sufficient time to warn people about the reboot, so we will have to do it on Thursday.  Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software.  We hope that any issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading without bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems.  Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know so we can investigate).  We expect the systems to be back to be back up by 5pm.

UofT Network Outage on November 7, 2010

Currently there is a UofT network outage scheduled for the early morning (from 00:01 to 06:00)  on Sunday November 7, 2010 for the primary Internet connection.  The outage should last between 1 and 2 hours during that time period.

Server reboots

The mail server is checking its filesystems and so it (and coxeter) will probably be up by 5pm.  The other servers are up now.

New Blog Passwords

If you have an account on the blog server then you will need to change your password after our security updates. This is quite simple; you can have a new password sent to your email address by following the “Lost your password?” link on the login page.

Blogs and Wikis are now more secure

The blogs and wikis on the departmental servers are now more secure.  Captchas will have to be used to create accounts or to make comments by unauthenticated users.  It is hoped that this will cut down on spam and help prevent compromises.
