Server updates on 2017sep20 were successful

The departmental servers appear to be working fine after the updates this afternoon.

It took slightly longer (less than 15 minutes) than expected to bring coxeter back up.

Updates at 4:15pm on Wednesday September 20, 2017

The departmental servers coxeter, sphere, and the mail, web, share, and ptr servers will have software updates applied on Wednesday afternoon, September 20, 2017 which will require rebooting (most servers will be unavailable starting at 4:15pm). Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect the systems to be back up by 5:00pm.

web server update slightly delayed

The web server update is delayed by approximately one hour.

Web (www) server update at 3:45pm on Wednesday August 30, 2017

An update of the web server, www, will be applied and the server will be rebooted starting at approximately 3:45pm on Wednesday, Aug 30. Some updates will be applied somewhat earlier if it appears that the impact on the system should be minimal, so minor software issues may be noticed. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect that the web server will be back up by 4:30pm if there are no unforeseen problems.

Changes to the Spam Filtering Thresholds for UofT email

1) Due to large increases in spam emails arriving at the central UofT mail servers (UTORExchange, UTMail+, and UTORmail) they have decided to more aggressively filter email by default.  This may result in an increase in false-positives so people should check their junk email folders to ensure that no important email is being filtered.  More information is available at:

UofT Memo: Changes to Spam Filtering Thresholds

2) This does not affect our departmental email system (email addresses ending in @math.toronto.edu or @math.utoronto.ca).  For information about spam filtering here please see:

Mail server update at 3:45pm on Wednesday July 19, 2017

An update of the mail server will be applied and the server will be rebooted starting at approximately 3:45pm today, Wednesday, Jul 19.  Some updates will be applied somewhat earlier if it appears that the impact on the system should be minimal, so minor software issues may be noticed.  Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate).  We expect that the mail server will be back up in less than 10 minutes if there are no unforeseen problems.

Closing old blog/wiki sites. Update

As was mentioned in an earlier IT Status post (over 3 months ago) we have several old and apparently abandoned blog and wiki sites on blog.math.toronto.edu and wiki.math.toronto.edu.

Since we received no requests to preserve any wikis we will be shutting down that server in the near future and all data will be completely removed and no longer available.

The only requests to preserve blogs were for the Graduate blog, the Undergraduate blog, and the IT Status blog, so only those will remain.
