Normal operations resumed after power outage

All our systems appear to be functioning normally after the power to Bahen and 215 Huron was restored this morning.

Bahen and 215 Huron Power Shutdowns starting May 26, 2016

Major electrical shutdowns have been scheduled by the University.  Except for emergency power Bahen and 215 Huron will have complete power shutdowns on:

Thursday May 26, 2016 starting at 9:30pm and ending at 7:30am

All the departmental systems (coxeter, sphere, mail, web, etc.) will be brought down starting at 8:30pm before the outages and brought back up the following morning.  We estimate that things should be back to normal by about 8:30am.

In the event that special circumstances arise then, if time permits, a notice will be posted here.

coxeter update on 2016mar30 was successful

coxeter appears to be working  fine after the update.

coxeter update at 4:15pm on Wednesday March 30, 2016

coxeter will have software updates applied on Wednesday afternoon, March 30, 2016 which will require rebooting starting at 4:15pm. At present coxeter is the only machine requiring an update, although the mail and web servers may also need to be updated on Wednesday. Since some updates will be applied while coxeter is still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing coxeter down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect all systems to be back up by 5:00pm.

Networking updates on 2016mar16 were successful

The departmental networking appears to be working  fine after the updates.

Networking updates on 2016mar16 from 3pm-5pm

The main departmental networking infrastructure will be upgraded in the afternoon of Wednesday March 16 from 3pm until 5pm.  During this time there will be a few network outages (which should be less than about 5 minutes in total for a particular machine) as the switches connecting desktop computers are moved and as the main departmental servers are moved to new connections to the University backbone.  The new connection will provide redundancy for desktop computers and (in the future) for some of the main servers.  The new connection to the University backbone will run at 10Gbps so that transferring large files will be faster.

University Employee/Student Payroll and Work-From-Home Phishing Scam

Faculty, staff, and students at Canadian Universities are being targeted by phishing scammers.  Either payroll information is requested so that the scammers can divert funds or people (usually students) are recruited to accept money into their bank accounts which then then forward to others.  This appears to be a money laundering scheme.

Brief network outage to UofT backbone on Thursday (2015dec17) at 11am

A brief network outage is scheduled for Thursday (2015dec17) at 11am as the departmental connection to the University backbone is upgraded from 1Gbps to 10Gbps.

The outage should last 5 minutes at most; actually probably less than 1 minute.

Postponed: Second overnight power outage for Bahen and 215 Huron

The overnight power outage for Bahen and 215 Huron that was scheduled for this week has been postponed (likely until January).

Bahen and 215 Huron Power Outages

Major electrical shutdowns have been scheduled by the University.  Except for emergency power Bahen will have a complete power shutdown on:

Thursday December 10, 2015 starting at 11pm and ending at 7am

Power to both Bahen and 215 Huron will be unavailable on:

Tuesday December 15, 2015 starting at 11pm and ending at 7am

All the departmental systems (coxeter, mail, web, etc.) will be brought down between 10pm and 11pm before the outages and brought back up the following morning between 7am and 8am.

In the event that special circumstances arise and either of these shutdowns is rescheduled then, if time permits, a notice will be posted here
