We are planning to install the latest version (R2011a) of matlab on sphere today.
There seem to be some problems with the matlab installer. We are trying to find a workaround, but it is not clear if the update to R2011a will work today.

Note: The start time for the reboots will be 3:45pm due to summer hours.
The departmental servers coxeter, sphere, and the mail, web, and blog/wiki servers will have software updates applied on Wednesday afternoon, August 3, 2011 which will require rebooting (most servers will be unavailable starting at 3:45pm). Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect the systems to be back up by 4:30pm.

It is recommended people refrain from editing pages on the blog servers during these updates to avoid losing work.
There was a security problem with xrdb that Red Hat tried to fix. The security problem is apparently fixed, but they introduced a new bug and X resource files are not properly being read now. The problem has been reported and we hope they will fix this new bug soon.
The departmental blogging server, blog.math.toronto.edu, has been upgraded to the latest version of WordPress (3.1).
