The computers and printer in Sidney Smith 622 are working again after access to that room was restored today, following the flooding of Sidney Smith Hall at the end of last week.
Server updates on 2014oct22 were successful
The departmental servers are working fine after the updates. In fact the updates went more quickly than expected and everything was back up before 4:30pm.
Updates at 3:45pm on Wednesday October 22, 2014
The departmental servers coxeter, sphere, and the mail, web, share, ptr, and blog/wiki servers will have software updates including a minor OS update (so this will start a little earlier than usual) applied on Wednesday afternoon, October 22, 2014 which will require rebooting (most servers will be unavailable starting at 3:45pm). Since some updates will be applied while the servers are still up there may be some temporary issues with some software. We hope that any such issues will be minor and by doing most of the upgrading before bringing systems down the shorter downtime will be worth the potential minor problems. Please restart any programs if you observe problems during the upgrades (and please let us know at requests@math.toronto.edu, so we can investigate). We expect the systems to be back up by 5:00pm.
New lw2 printer installed
A new lw2 printer has been installed. It is the successor to our current B&W printers and it should be the same as the older printers, except a little faster and the print is darker. Please let us know (email requests@math.toronto.edu) if there are problems with this new printer.
If you set up lw2 on your own laptop please note that it has changed from a Xerox Phaser 4510DT to a Xerox Phaser 5550DN. Limited testing seems to indicate that the old driver software still works fine under some Windows configurations, however there are drivers on the Xerox support website:
http://www.support.xerox.com/support/phaser-5550/downloads/enus.html
if you wish to update your system (select your OS from the falldown menu on that page).
New computers in 215 Huron
The public computers in HU1009 are being upgraded (two were available as of yesterday). One computer has a faster CPU and graphics processor; it is the one that has a red dot on its label and the new (larger) monitor. It is not clear that the speed difference will be noticeable.
New machines are also being installed in the graduate office on the 9th floor. Currently one machine is set up and three more will be configured. This room will also have one faster computer as described above.
We are planning to move the current lw2 printer into the 9th floor graduate office, after we test, for a few weeks, a replacement (which is supposed to arrive next week) for lw2 in the mailroom.
Upgrade of computers and monitors in SS622
The four computers in SS622 and their monitors and keyboards/mice have been upgraded. The lwss printer is currently not accessible from coxeter. We are investigating this problem.
final “bash” patch applied
Early this morning a final patch for bash was applied and all appears to be well with the departmental servers and linux desktops.
Once again we remind users that if you manage your own Linux/Unix or MacOS computer/laptop at home or in your office (especially if you have a webserver) then you should definitely fix this problem.
patches for serious “bash” problem
All the departmental servers have been patched to and users’ Red Hat desktops in the department have been updated to patch the serious bash bug that has been reported today.
There is an article at:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/09/24/bash_shell_vuln/
with some information about this.
There are still some issues and we are awaiting further patches.
If you manage your own Linux/Unix or MacOS computer (especially if you have a webserver) then you should definitely fix this problem.
Google access seems to have been restored
Access to google.com and google.ca seems to be working normally again.
