Network switch updates in Bahen

Half of the new network switches were installed and configured today and they appear to be working well.  The second half will be installed next week, most likely on Wednesday from 2pm-5pm (an email will be sent when the time is confirmed).

Network switch updates from 11am to 3pm on Wednesday, March 4, 2015

We will be updating the network infrastructure in Bahen on Wednesday (March 4, 2015) between 11am and 3pm, with new switches.  During that time period we expect that the network connection in any particular office will be offline for at most a half-hour. The new switches are more secure and support 1Gbps ethernet.

New lw3 printer installed

A new lw3 printer has been installed.  It is the same as the current lw2 printer which was upgraded in October, except that it has less RAM (more RAM has been ordered, but it has not arrived yet).  Please let us know (email requests@math.toronto.edu) if there are problems with this new printer.

If you set up lw3 on your own laptop please note that it has changed from a Xerox Phaser 4510DT to a Xerox Phaser 5550DN.  Limited testing seems to indicate that the old driver software still works fine under some Windows configurations, however there are drivers on the Xerox support website:

http://www.support.xerox.com/support/phaser-5550/downloads/enus.html

if you wish to update your system (select your OS from the falldown menu on that page).

coxeter and mail will be unavailable until about 5:30pm

The move of the data to the new disks on mail will take a little while longer.  It should be done by 5:30pm.

mail server downtime on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 3pm

On Tuesday, Jan 13 at about 3:00pm the mail server will be brought down to check the disks after a write problem earlier today, and also in preparation for an upgrade in February. The mail server should be back by 4:00pm.

Mac OS X 10.10 users and Firefox – Serious Security Issue

If you are running Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) and use Firefox then you should see (about an issue where a change in Apple’s logging may have logged all keystrokes entered into Firefox):

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/advisories/mfsa2014-90/

The main remediation mentioned there is:

This issue does not affect OS X users prior to 10.10. Users on OS X 10.10 should go to their /tmp folder and delete any files with names beginning with “CGLog_” followed by the name of a Mozilla product, such as “CGLog_firefox”.

SS622 functional again, after flood

The computers and printer in Sidney Smith 622 are working again after access to that room was restored today, following the flooding of Sidney Smith Hall at the end of last week.

lwss printer is accessible again

The lwss printer (in SS622) is now accessible.

New lw2 printer installed

A new lw2 printer has been installed.  It is the successor to our current B&W printers and it should be the same as the older printers, except a little faster and the print is darker.  Please let us know (email requests@math.toronto.edu) if there are problems with this new printer.

If you set up lw2 on your own laptop please note that it has changed from a Xerox Phaser 4510DT to a Xerox Phaser 5550DN.  Limited testing seems to indicate that the old driver software still works fine under some Windows configurations, however there are drivers on the Xerox support website:

New computers in 215 Huron

The public computers in HU1009 are being upgraded (two were available as of yesterday).  One computer has a faster CPU and graphics processor; it is the one that has a red dot on its label and the new (larger) monitor.  It is not clear that the speed difference will be noticeable.

New machines are also being installed in the graduate office on the 9th floor.  Currently one machine is set up and three more will be configured.  This room will also have one faster computer as described above.

We are planning to move the current lw2 printer into the 9th floor graduate office, after we test, for a few weeks, a replacement (which is supposed to arrive next week) for lw2 in the mailroom.
